Merewif? What does that mean and how do I say it?

Merewif is pronounced meer-wife. It comes from an Old English term for mermaid or sea witch.

What do the terms GOLD PLATE and GOLD FILL mean?

I am happy to answer any questions in addition to the info below, yourfriend@merewif.com

GOLD PLATED JEWELRY

All Merewif gold plated jewelry is 100% brass with sterling silver ear posts beneath the gold plate.  We use a much thicker gold plate than the industry standard, and once the pieces are plated, a protective finish is added to prolong the life of the gold plate. There is no nickel in any of our materials. Our gold plated jewelry should hold its plating for years if the wearer takes proper care of the piece (see below).

GOLD FILLED JEWELRY

We use gold filled chain on certain delicate necklace styles. Gold filled jewelry is composed of a number of layers wherein a gold alloy is permanently bonded to the brass core with both heat and pressure. Because of the permanent nature of gold filled jewelry, this category tends to be slightly more expensive than plated or vermeil jewelry but should not be confused with solid gold jewelry.

How do I care for my Merewif jewelry?

To prolong the life of your gold plated and gold filled pieces, we recommend removing your jewelry when doing the following:

  • swimming (chlorine and salt can affect plating over time), showering, or washing your hands

  • applying lotions, oils, perfumes, etc.

  • cleaning, especially with harsh chemicals

  • rings when getting a manicure and necklaces/earrings when having hair treated

Do not use jewelry cleaner on plated items. You can polish these pieces with a damp cloth.

All Merewif pieces come packaged in a padded box. Save these so you can properly pack your jewelry when traveling.

*Opals are porous stones and can discolor when exposed to chlorine, salt water, and harsh chemicals.
